Episode 1

The very first episode introduces us to Violet and her condition after the war, along with the way she talks and acts towards and with people, and the way she thinks of herself.

Summery

Claudia (Boss/majors friend) comes to pick violet up from hospital, takes her to the Evergarden household because thats her new home, but ends up taking her to his writing letter company, only for Violet wanting to become a doll because of the words the last words he spoke to her.

Characters introduced/said

Violet Evergarden.

Claudia Hodgins.

Major Gilbert.

Benedict Blue

Interactions with others

When she is in the car with Claudia Hodgins, he got her three stuffed animals, a dog, a cat, and a bunny. She chooses the dog after she chooses Claudia asks why she chose the dog, she responds with "Because the Majors brother once told me, your Gilberts dog." (english subtitles) She doesn't understand that her words would hurt someones feelings.

Also when she arrives at Evergarden household, the Mistress of the household talks about how Violet can think of her as her real mother, Violet says "I don't have parents, so, I don't need replacements" Then the Mistress talks about how she lost her son in the war, Violet responds with, "I can't become a replacement for your lost child." Violet doesn't understand that her worlds have impact on peoples emotions, because she herself doesn't understand/feel them.

Another interaction she had was with Benedict (letter deliverer) he was showing her how to do the work, but she kept taking things too seriously and saying sir and saluting him.

How she perceives herself. (Violet)

When Claudia is about to leave the Evergarden household. Violet asks why the Major is leaving her there. Violet then calls herself "Major's tool" and says "is it because she lost her arms did she lose her value as a weapon?" and if the major doesn't need her anymore, she should be thrown away.

This implies that she thinks of herself as a "tool," after hearing everyone call her a "tool," and "weapon."

Times (Important to me) emotions are shown (Violets)

This is also one of the 4 times she unknowing to her, shows emotion. This time she is upset that the major is leaving her at the household and thinking that she is no longer useful to him anymore.

Another time was back when she was leaving the hospital, Claudia Hodgins gave Violet her belongs back in a suitcase, as soon as she got it she looked inside of it frantically looking for an emerald brooch, but couldn't find it. She becomes frantic and keeps asking Claudia where it is and she need to look for it

because it was something the major gave it to her. Claudia understands that it is important to her, so he tells her he will look for it.

The very last time she showed emotion was at the company, she was watching a Cattleya (a doll) write a letter for a man, when Cattleya said "I love you" Violet had a flashback to when the major said "I love you to Violet," Violet wanted to know what those words meant from the time he said it to her. So when the man left and Cattleya asked who she was, Violet again became panicked and curious and basically yelling how she knew what they man want to say.

At the very end of the episode she tells Claudia she wants to be a doll and when he asked why she then yells "I just want to know! .........I Love you, I want to know what it means. The major said those words to me after he gave me my last orders. That was the first time I heard those words from the major. I can't understand what that means" Claudia then lets her become an auto memories doll.

Foreshadowing

  • When Claudia was walking in the hospital he was also talking about Violet the camera show a doll sitting on a table, and when is went over he said "She was just a tool, without a heart," this foreshadows that people will/see her a a doll who has no heart.

  • Violet and Claudia are walking back home (company) Claudia tells Violet that, Her body is on fire and burning up because of the things she did. But again she takes it in a literal and is not understanding what he means. He then responds "You'll understand one day. And then you'll realize for the first time that you have many burns." This implies that later on in the series she will realize what she has done and the pain she caused to others in her past.

My opinion on this episode

The first time I watched this episode, I immediately fell in love with the animation and the art style. It's so smooth and just so pleasing to the eye. I also really enjoyed that she even showed character development even though its just the first episode. Other then that the episode takes a very slow pace with Violet wanting to become an auto memories doll.
